“If what I say resonates with you; it is merely because we are both branches of the same tree”
W.B. Yeats.

fiona and christianMy name is Fiona Cole and 14 years ago, Christian Cole Furniture was founded through my union with Christian Cole. As a keen surfer and fisherman he collected unusual pieces of driftwood along beaches across Australia. In year 10 he built his mother a timber stool and finding it incredibly gratifying went on to complete an apprenticeship in Cabinet and Furniture making. I, originally a farm girl, grew up surrounded by Murray River Red Gum trees. I would eagerly accompany my father to country clearing sales, bidding on early century pieces of timber furniture. Enthusiastically I’d watch on as he repaired and restored each piece. I learnt a great deal about the different joints and techniques of working with timber and the importance of preserving it.

Needless to say Christian and I share many things in common, most importantly, two high spirited boys and the beauty of wood!

two high spirited boys

We’re extremely passionate about preserving dead trees and un-used timber destined for land fill or fire wood, instead working with it to produce a piece of furniture or architectural structure that can be admired for generations to come. We’d like to give the tree the recognition it rightly deserves having endured hundreds of years on earth, in many instances enduring fire, flood, plagues and powerful winds. Timber is after all a substance unable to be reproduced. With a soul of its own and no two pieces being the same it’s truly rewarding to find it a “final resting place” where it is truly loved and appreciated by those who choose to surround themselves with it.

In our weekly Blog we plan to share the knowledge we have gained over the years and continue to learn more about trees and timber and plan to share that information with you-things such as the historical significance of timber in the world and the science behind its growth. The many types, individual traits and uses for timber. We also hope to give our readers an insight into our family business and how work life infiltrates our whole life.
