Australian Furniture Awards in Melbourne
Australian awards in Melbourne
After 16 years of being held in Perth, for the first time in their history the Australian Furniture of the Year Awards were held in Melbourne, culminating in a spectacular gala awards night that coincided with Furnitex 2012.
The awards recognise excellence in the design, manufacture and marketing of Australia’s home grown furniture. Entries were open to any member of the Australian Furniture Association, FIAA Queensland, FIAA NSW and South Australia whose piece(s) met the ACCC guidelines for Made in Australia.
This year all entries were self nominated and judged by the nominee’s state organisation with the winners from each state becoming finalists for the national awards.
Led by Rod McLean, a recognised furniture designer with ten years’ experience as chief judge of both the Australian Furniture of the Year Awards and the Furnitex awards, the Australian Furniture of the Year Awards (national) were judged by a panel of industry experts from a variety of states and backgrounds.
This year the Best of the Best category was won by a boutique Melbourne furniture company, Christian Cole Furniture, which makes customised solid timber furniture and cabinetry using recycled or FSC certified timber.
All products are hand made using traditional joinery techniques. Commenting on the pieces made by Christian Cole, the judges said the Coupled Curved bedroom suite: “best demonstrates innovativeness of design resolved into a beautiful piece of craftsmanship”.
